Suspect on illegal ivory charge ordered to pay Sh5 million (USD$3070) bond by a Nairobi court (Kenya)

A suspect charged with illegal possession of ivory has been slapped with a bond of Sh5 million with a surety in the same amount or pay a cash bail of Sh2 million for his release as he awaits hearing of the case.Mr Arnold Denis Gakuha had been arraigned before the Kibera Law Courts in Nairobi. He had earlier been arrested at Galleria Mall parking area near the Bomas of Kenya in Nairobi County on Monday (April 22, 2013) by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officials while in possession of 57kg of ivory packed in two gunny bags packed in his vehicle.He was arrested and booked at Langata Police Station. The vehicle he was driving was impounded and will be part of the exhibits.
The case has been set for hearing on June 20, 2013.Meanwhile, thirty two suspected poachers are in police custody following their arrest by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officials in connection to various wildlife related offences across the country in the past one week of anti-poaching operation.A firearm, 204 rounds of ammunition and 49kg of ivory have been recovered. About 70kg of bush meat and a vehicle were also impounded.
Two suspects were arrested and a rifle, 204 rounds of ammunition and two pieces of ivory weighing 10kg recovered on Friday (April 19, 2013) at Baragoi trading centre in Mararal, Samburu County. In the neighboring Laikipia County two suspects were arrested and two pieces of ivory weighing 6kg recovered at Rumuruti on Tuesday (April 16, 2013).
In Narok County, two suspects were arrested at Longisa Shopping Centre and five pieces of ivory weighing 17kg recovered and a motor bike they were using impounded on Saturday (April 20, 2013). A suspect was also arrested and 60kgs of game meat recovered at Samai village near Loitoktok town in Kajido County on Friday (April 19, 2013).
Elsewhere in Voi town, Taita Taveta County, two suspects were arrested and two pieces of ivory weighing 10kgs recovered on Sunday (April 16, 2013). Two other suspects were arrested in Ogembo district in Kisii County while in possession of a piece of ivory weighing 6kg.
